Poppelvej - Zoonotic Spillover Mourvedre 2021
Region: McLaren Vale
100% Mourvèdre hand-picked early and wild fermented as whole berries. Foot stomped, hand-plunged for gentle extraction before pressing to old oak barrels
for a 6-month maturation on solids. Unfined, unfiltered. Full blooded this ain't. There's dark fruits and depth of flavour, yes, but this wine really sings with lifted aromatics and a buoyant fruit profile that glides effortlessly over the palate. Refreshing and moreish stuff.
Paeroa vineyard in McLaren Vale, SA. Paeroa is a Maori word meaning ‘long ridge’. Sustainably farmed. Soils are ironstone over clay. A sunny vineyard based in the Willunga foothills cooled by winds off the Gulf St. Vincent a few kilometres away.
Overall, the 2021 season saw average rainfall, but this fell primarily early in the growing season, seeing the wettest spring since 2010. September and October were wetter and warmer than average. November was the driest since 1990 and weirdly recorded the highest average daily temps of any month in the growing season. These warm temperatures coincided with flowering and fruit set which, for most sites, was completed by the end of the month. Summer was cooler than average with only 2 days above 35°C recorded. February conditions were particularly mild.
