Daterra Viticultores - Portela do Vento 2018
Region: Ribera Sacra / Galicia
Grapes: Mencia with some Garnacha Tintorera
Named after a pass in the nearby hillsides, Portela do Vento is predominately Mencia, a grape native to Spain's North-West which I would implore you to try if you haven't already. The cooler more maritime climate produces a lighter and fresher style than the richer counterparts of Rioja and Toro. This example is full of complex fruit character, with plush plums and hints of smoke and spice and opens nicely in the glass
Notes for Nerds:
"Laura Lorenzo is one of Galicia's most passionate and exciting wine makers. Located in the small town of Manzaneda in the Bibei River valley she farms a number of parcels in the neighbouring hillsides. She works all biodynamically and all the wines she makes undergo a natural fermentation."
