Catherine Bernard - La Route des Cretes 2019
Grapes: Grenache / Carignan
A deeply flavoured and juicy wine from Catherine, made with grapes sourced from neighbouring organic vineyards to supplement her own. Comines dark fruits, red berries and spice with a lick of earth. Medium bodied and very drinkable.
Catherine is orignally from Brittany in northern France and grew up on a farm. Having decided to return to agriculture she eventually bought a tiny property in Saint Drezery in 2005. Over the years she has purchased more land and now has 4 ha under vine. All certified organic.
In the early stages she vinified each harvest in friends’ wineries, until 2015 when she completed the building of her small 'chai'. It is a thoughtfully laid out building with cellar work done by gravity, its design inspired by the work of Australian architect, Glenn Murcutt. Production here is small with most staying in France. For the first 13 years Catherine worked alone but was joined by her son Nicolas in 2018.
