Bottle of Antipodes Pinot Gris 2020 750ml

Antipodes - Pinot Gris 2020

$42.00

Region: Adelaide Hills

Grapes: Pinot Gris

From Mount Crawford, Adelaide HillsAnother small (1 barrel) parcel of fruit kindly supplied by friends. 2020 was a tight vintage for everyone and there were only crumbs to go around if vineyards were not already secured. Made simply and just like his white burgundies – gentle press, slow natural ferment in barrel, aging on lees for as long as it takes.

MORE INFO

This is perhaps the fruitiest of the 2020 wines, despite its barrel fermentation and aging. Classic Pinot Gris apple, pear and spice and that beautiful soulful complexity as per all of JJ’s whites – oxidative complexity woven into the fabric to build volume.

Richly textured with a nice combination of pear and orange juice acidity and lightly bitter citrus pith making for a dry but juicy finish; fruit juice with a marmalade kick. There is some real excitement here from a variety that is all too often bland and boring.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Antipodés is the realisation of a long-held dream for Jean-Jacques Morel, the natural micro producer from Saint-Aubin in Burgundy. After selling his wines in Australia for many years, JJ was invited to attend the sustainable wine fair Rootstock Sydney in 2014, where he was enchanted by the openness and camaraderie of the Australian vignerons; so much so, that he visited the Adelaide Hills after the event to share his wines and meet some minds. JJ was amazed by the sense of community; something he feels is severely lacking in today’s ultra-competitive Burgundian landscape. His furtive mind was inspired and the seed was sown to make wine down under. Slowly over the subsequent months the desire grew and his dream was finally realized in 2017 with his first Australian wine.

Rejoicing in the freedom from restrictive French wine laws, he is indulging his curiosity through experimenting with new blends and varieties from the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley. Jean-Jacques matches his French philosophies and agricultural practices, sourcing biologically-farmed fruit and the winemaking is minimal to the extreme.
