Antipodes - Grenache 2020

$42.00

Region: Barossa

Grapes: Grenache

Pale soft cherry red with a youthful pink tint and a treasure-trove of ruby highlights. A deep, deep nose. Scented with dried red rose, dried herbs and both fresh and dried red berries. There is a dusting of sweet spice and savoury earthiness. Complex and complete.

MORE INFO

J-J bought around ¾ of a tonne of old vine Grenache from Wayne Ahrens at Smallfry in Vine Vale, Barossa. In classic J-J fashion the ferment was largely whole bunches with some destemmed berries over the top and then left alone until the ferment builds momentum, in this case quite a while. J-J is a very patient man! Then he walks gently over the top to wet the cap and that is all until pressing, in this case to a couple of old barriques.

Medium plus weight. Starts out silky and seductive with a nice sweet sour fruit tang, a burst of sweet spice and salt. The long acid spine continues alongside the very present tannins that build and persist. Notes of earth and leather come and go among the fruit and spice. So much going on here. This is like no Aussie Grenache.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Antipodés is the realisation of a long-held dream for Jean-Jacques Morel, the natural micro producer from Saint-Aubin in Burgundy. After selling his wines in Australia for many years, JJ was invited to attend the sustainable wine fair Rootstock Sydney in 2014, where he was enchanted by the openness and camaraderie of the Australian vignerons; so much so, that he visited the Adelaide Hills after the event to share his wines and meet some minds. JJ was amazed by the sense of community; something he feels is severely lacking in today’s ultra-competitive Burgundian landscape. His furtive mind was inspired and the seed was sown to make wine down under. Slowly over the subsequent months the desire grew and his dream was finally realized in 2017 with his first Australian wine.

Rejoicing in the freedom from restrictive French wine laws, he is indulging his curiosity through experimenting with new blends and varieties from the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley. Jean-Jacques matches his French philosophies and agricultural practices, sourcing biologically-farmed fruit and the winemaking is minimal to the extreme.
