Bottle of Eleni & Edouard Vocoret Chablis 'Le Bas de Chapelot' 2019 750ml

Eleni & Edouard Vocoret - Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot 2019

Region: Chablis / Burgundy

Grapes: Chardonnay

The fruitiest of the range with aromas of blood orange and apricot alongside more floral notes. Vibrant and serious with an amazing amount of depth and length. A fantastic Chablis. A little closed in its youth but opens up beautifully. Will be legendary in a few years.

Le Bas translates to below and this plot borders with the bottom of the 1er Cru of Chapelot, part of the Montee de Tonnerre hill, just a few yards away to the north sits Le Clos Grand Cru. The quality of this spot as a ‘village wine’ is outstanding. South East exposition. Deeper soil than the 1er Cru of Chapelot so gives more richness (Clay, Limestone, and Kimmeridgian). 3.2 ha, 40 years old. Wild Fermented in steel then elevage in barrel for 12 months of 6 to 30 year old barriques.

Edouard and Eleni have Chablis running through their veins with Edouard's family owning a large estate in the north of the region. Meanwhile Eleni had been working for some time for Vincent Dauvissat (who helped them get started). The young couple wanted to start their own estate so in 2013 they purchased 5 ha from their father and grandfather.

Wine making is consistent across all wines. Wines are wild fermented in tank then elevage takes place in seasoned barrels for 12 months.

“I trained with Daniel Barraud in the Maconnais and fell in love with how he made wine. Most Chablis is only made in steel tanks, but that’s not what we are looking for. We want stoniness, saltiness and acidity, but use the old barrels to help smooth the wines out”. – Noble Rot – Wine from another Galaxy
