Riesling

Riesling is an aromatic white grape variety with high acidity. It is one of the most versatile grapes in the world, and appears in a range of styles and a range of places. Fruit characters range from lemon, green apple and elderflower in cooler climates to nectarine, peach and pineapple in more moderate ones.

Riesling and botrytis are good friends, and where it features, one should expect notes of honey, tea, dried apricot and ginger. Similarly to Chenin Blanc, the grape’s searing acidity ensures the wine remains balanced and refreshing even when coupled with higher levels of residual sugar.

Different regions produce different styles. Rieslings from Alsace, France tend to be rich and weighty with tropical fruit. Rieslings from the Mosel tend to be delicate and fine boned with a tingly, sherbet like character. Rieslings from the Rheingau and Rheinhessen are powerful and muscular with riper stone fruit characters. In Australia, rieslings from the Clare Valley tend to be bone dry and are famous for their Bickford’s lime cordial aromas and enamel stripping acidity. Victorian and Tasmanian examples often tread a middle path between the styles of the Clare Valley and the Rheingau, coupling texture with ripe fruit.

A common misconception is that all German Rieslings are sweet. This is not the case. Though many of them are made in an off dry style, particularly in the Mosel (a region producing some of the finest examples in the world) dry styles do exist, and are becoming increasingly popular. If you do like them on the drier side then look for terms like ‘GG’ or ‘Trocken’ on the label, or check the alcohol level. Anything below 10 or 11% is likely to have some level of residual sweetness.

Riesling is Queen when it comes to food pairing. Off dry or sweet styles are perfect with spicy South East Asian Cuisine, dry styles complement fried foods like fish and chips, and rich fruity examples couple well with richer dishes like Roast Pork or Tarte Flambé. Whatever the occasion, there is a Riesling waiting.
