El Jolgorio - Tobala Mezcal
Region: Oaxaca / Mexico
El Jolgorio roughly translates as 'The Revelry' in homage to the original purpose for making mezcal in Oaxacan rural areas, that is as a reason to celebrate. Est. in 2010 by the Cortes family with more than 5 generations producing mezcal, El Jolgorio showcases mezcales from 6 villages in the central valleys of Oaxaca by the hands of several maestros mezcaleros (master distillers) living in these communities.
El Jolgorio Tobalá was made by Gregorio Martínez Jarquín at palenque 'De Cortes' in Santiago Matatlán using 15 year old agaves, roasted in a conical pit oven, tahona crushed, fermented in sabino wooden vats and double distilled in a copper pot still.
