Anders Frederick Steen (Ardeche)
Ardeche / France
Immediately recognizable for the spare poetry of his labels, Anders Frederick Steen never
makes the same wine twice. Working solely with organic fruit from his own vineyards in the Ardeche and that of some trusted grower friends, Steen works with a range of varieties. Any blending is done during the harvest and different varieties are fermented together, usually outside of the cellar under a big starry sky.
His background as both a sommelier and a chef (NOMA, Manfreds, Relae) mean the wines trample spectrums in terms of style and weight. Since 2013, Steen and his family have been living in the village of Valvignères in Ardeche, and until recently he made all his wines at Jocelyne & Gérald Oustric’s farm, Le Mazel. He has now converted his home cellar in to a winery, complete with manual “pressoir”. Steen’s preferred method is to listen to the season and let the wine make itself. Never repetitive, these wines are thoughtful, esoteric expressions of the Ardeche.
