We are a small wine bar in Marrickville and we have many nice things.
We’re here to share our love for interesting drinks, challenge the culture of exclusivity and elitism in the wine world, and encourage people to think about what they are drinking and where it comes from.
Our list favours small producers, sustainable farming and minimal intervention winemaking. By way of introducing a little more nuance into the conversation around natural wine, we like to list unassuming or lesser known producers who may fly under the radar of the current zeitgest alongside the cult and collectable superstars.
Wine should surprise and delight, so leave your assumptions at the door.
Who are we and what’s with the name?
Founded in 2017, Where’s Nick began as a family dream. Two brothers misguidedly approached their youngest brother Nick about coming on board with a fun little bar project. Nick quite reasonably pointed out that he’d never expressed any interest in owning a bar, wanted nothing to do with it and kindly asked them to leave him out of it all together. Which they did, for the most part. Except the name, the logo of his face and the giant painting of Nick as Napoleon on the wall.
In 2019 Where’s Nick won Wine Bar of the Year, and all was right in the world. The team looked ahead with excitement and optimism which, in hindsight, may have been a touch premature.
While 2020 was a dark year for just about everyone, there was a silver lining: somewhere between lockdowns and general chaos, the brothers were able to coax award-winning sommelier (and long-time barfly) away from the world of fine dining, and into the circus of Where’s Nick.
Formerly of three-hatted Sydney restaurant Sixpenny, co-owner Bridget now runs the bar and its beverage program while you’ll find the brothers hanging out next door at the Goblin Wine Shop.
